Things to Do in Ålesund — Art Nouveau, Fjords & Sauna Experiences
Discover Ålesund's Art Nouveau architecture, UNESCO fjords, and thriving sauna culture. Your complete travel guide to western Norway's most beautiful city.
Ålesund is one of Norway’s most visually striking cities — a compact cluster of islands where Art Nouveau spires rise above a maze of waterways, and the Sunnmøre Alps provide a jagged backdrop on every horizon. Rebuilt almost entirely after a devastating fire in 1904, the city has a rare architectural coherence that few Norwegian towns can match. But beyond the heritage streets and hilltop panoramas, Ålesund has quietly become one of the country’s best destinations for waterfront sauna culture. Here is everything you need to plan a memorable visit.
Sauna Experiences in Ålesund
Ålesund’s relationship with water runs deep, and the local sauna scene reflects that connection beautifully. Whether you want a design-forward floating sauna or a rustic communal bathhouse, the city has options that will satisfy every preference.
Hotel Saunas with a View
Brosundet sits within one of Ålesund’s most iconic heritage buildings — a converted herring oil factory right on the water. The hotel’s sauna is positioned to make the most of its canal-side setting, offering guests a genuine sweat followed by a plunge into the fjord. It is the kind of experience that combines Norwegian sauna culture with world-class design, and it is hard to beat for sheer atmosphere.
The Svai Sauna Fleet
The name “Svai” refers to a boat drifting quietly at anchor, and that spirit of gentle floating adventure defines this trio of saunas anchored around Ålesund’s waterfront. Svai Sauna Arré, Svai Sauna Heite, and Svai Sauna Kubben each offer their own character — from intimate barrel saunas to larger social spaces — but all share the same core ritual: heat up, step out, and cool down in the sea. Book in advance, especially in summer when demand peaks.
Community Bathing
Kvile Badstu takes a more communal approach, rooted in the Norwegian tradition of the neighbourhood bathhouse. The name “Kvile” means rest or respite, and the atmosphere here is unhurried and welcoming for first-timers. It is a good choice if you want to experience sauna culture alongside locals rather than in a purely tourist setting.
Nature & Outdoor Activities
Aksla Viewpoint
The 418 steps up to Fjellstua on Aksla hill are the most rewarding short climb in Ålesund. At the top, the panorama sweeps across every island, channel, and mountain in the region — best at golden hour when the light turns the Art Nouveau rooftops amber. The climb takes around 15–20 minutes from the city centre and the steps are well maintained year-round.
Geirangerfjord Day Trip
Approximately 75 minutes from Ålesund by car or bus, Geirangerfjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most photographed places in Norway. The Seven Sisters waterfall and the sheer cliff walls dropping hundreds of metres into emerald water make the journey essential for any visitor. Take the ferry between Geiranger and Hellesylt for a proper fjord perspective — the route takes around an hour.
Hjørundfjord and the Sunnmøre Islands
Less visited than Geirangerfjord but arguably more dramatic, Hjørundfjord cuts deep into the Sunnmøre Alps and can be explored by boat from Ålesund. The archipelago of islands around the city — Giske, Godøy, and Vigra among them — offers beaches, ancient burial mounds, and some of the best coastal cycling in western Norway.
Atlantic Ocean Road
A two-hour drive south brings you to the Atlantic Ocean Road (Atlanterhavsveien), a series of bridges connecting small islands across open sea. This engineering marvel is especially atmospheric in stormy weather, when waves crash over the road in dramatic fashion. Combine it with a stop in Molde for fjord views backed by snow-capped peaks.
Food & Culture
Art Nouveau Architecture
Start any visit at the Jugendstilsenteret — the Art Nouveau Centre — housed in a beautifully restored pharmacy. The exhibition explains how, after the 1904 fire, Norwegian architects chose the then-fashionable Art Nouveau style to rebuild the entire city, resulting in a coherent streetscape found nowhere else in the world. Even without entering, simply walking Kongens gate and Apotekergata is an architectural education.
Local Seafood
Ålesund is Norway’s most important fishing port, and the proximity to the source makes the seafood here genuinely exceptional. The fish market by the canal offers fresh catches daily. For a more formal dinner, the harbour-area restaurants serve bacalao — salt cod stew — a dish with deep roots in local culture thanks to centuries of trade with Portugal and Spain.
Ålesund Aquarium
The aquarium at Tueneset Park is small but excellent, with a strong focus on local marine species including seals that you can watch being fed. It makes a good option for an overcast afternoon or if you are travelling with children.
Getting There & When to Visit
Getting there: Ålesund Airport (AES) on Vigra island is served by flights from Oslo (around 50 minutes), Bergen, and several European cities seasonally. A bus connects the airport to the city centre in about 25 minutes. Alternatively, Ålesund sits on the Hurtigruten coastal ferry route, making it an excellent inclusion on a longer Norwegian voyage.
By car: The city is around 4.5 hours from Bergen and 7 hours from Oslo via the E136 or E39. Several spectacular scenic routes — including the Trollstigen mountain road (open summer only) — can be incorporated into the drive.
Best time to visit: June through August brings long days, open mountain passes, and peak fjord season. September and October offer quieter streets and dramatic autumn light. Winter visits reward the adventurous with possible Northern Lights sightings and a very different atmosphere — the sauna culture is most compelling when it is genuinely cold outside.
Ålesund rewards visitors who take time to move slowly — a morning walk through the Art Nouveau streets, an afternoon boat trip to a fjord, and an evening session at a waterfront sauna watching the sun dip toward the horizon.
