AUGA Bad Lærdal

Roman-inspired barrel sauna by the Sognefjord

Lærdal, Western Norway

AUGA Bad is a Roman-inspired bathing complex, or balneae, situated on the shores of the Lærdal fjord at Grandane. The centrepiece is a wood-fired barrel sauna built in Lithuania and transported all the way to this quiet corner of the Sognefjord. Heated by a sauna master using locally sourced firewood, the barrel holds up to 8 people in a wonderfully intimate setting.

The outdoor space around the sauna is crafted from sustainable local materials, including driftwood and reclaimed planks from nearby farms. Between sauna rounds, guests wade into the fjord for a bracing cold dip with views of the surrounding mountains. The whole experience feels artisan and grounded, a world away from commercial spa culture.

Lærdal is a historic village known for its beautifully preserved wooden houses at Gamle Lærdalsøyri, the Norwegian Wild Salmon Centre, and the world’s longest road tunnel. AUGA combines perfectly with a day exploring this fascinating corner of inner Sogn, accessible by car via the Lærdal Tunnel or the scenic mountain road over Filefjell.
