Horisontti Sauna

Architect-designed communal sauna on the pier in Vadsø

Vadso, Northern Norway

Horisontti Sauna is a newly built, architect-designed communal sauna at the end of the pier in Ytrebyfjæra in Vadso, offering sweeping views of the Varangerfjord and the horizon. The name “Horisontti” means “horizon” in Finnish, a nod to Vadso’s deep Kven and Finnish cultural heritage.

The Experience

The fully designed sauna features an electric stove with excellent loyly (steam), creating a warm and authentic sauna atmosphere. Outside, an campfire area invites you to linger between rounds, and direct sea access allows for bracing cold dips in the Varangerfjord.

Hot and cold showers are available, along with bio soap, a rest area, and bathing ladders. The benches, fire pit, and ladders are open to everyone — even without a sauna booking.

Horisontti is a place for warmth, peace, and community, inspired by Kven and Finnish sauna traditions, Vadso’s immigrant history, and the stark beauty of the Finnmark landscape.
