Kirkenes Badstuforening is a sauna association based in Kirkenes, Norway’s border town near Russia and Finland. Their unique yurt sauna (jurte) sits by the shore of Forstevatn, offering a communal sauna experience in the far northeast of Norway.
The Experience
The sauna yurt has a diameter of 4 meters and features two wood-fired stoves, creating excellent heat and loyly (steam). The interior is beautifully crafted with wood, and the three-layer cotton and wool fabric of the yurt creates a wonderful atmosphere that retains heat superbly. The yurt accommodates 8–15 sauna bathers at a time.
After heating up, Forstevatn lake is just steps away for a refreshing cold dip. In winter, ice swimming adds an extra dimension to the experience. The lakeside setting surrounded by sub-Arctic nature makes for a peaceful retreat.
