Manshausen Island Resort was founded by polar explorer Borge Ousland, the first person to reach the North Pole solo, on a private island in the Steigen Archipelago off the coast of northern Norway. The sauna here is as unique as its setting, built using leftover materials from the resort’s construction and old slate roof tiles found on the island itself.
The sauna and relaxation area connect to a central saltwater pond on the island, purpose-built for cold plunging after a session. The design, by Stinessen Arkitektur, relates to the positioning in the pond and surrounding landscape, offering comfortable seating inside and easy access to the cold water. A wood-fired hot tub complements the sauna experience, and on clear winter nights, the aurora borealis may dance overhead.
The resort’s award-winning sea cabins, perched on stilts over the water, are architectural landmarks that have been featured in design publications worldwide. Access is by boat from Steigen, adding to the sense of escape and adventure. Sauna and sea pool access is included for all guests, making this a truly exclusive Arctic wellness experience in one of Norway’s most spectacular settings.
